La voie du Puy sur le GR® 65 étape 1

  • on foot : 4h15 - Difficulty Difficult
  • Distance : 21.4km
  • Vertical rise : 317m
  • Public : Sportifs
On this section of the GR 65, walkers and pilgrims make their way through the Béarn countryside. It's still a long way from the Pyrenees, but it's an opportunity to discover the small villages of the Béarn region, in a landscape shaped by agriculture and livestock farming.
Itinerary
  • Step 1 :

Louvigny Mill Take the small street alongside the Crédit Agricole (1, 233 m). Further down on the left, a sign indicates the distance remaining to Saint-Jacques: 910 km! Further down, the path comes to a lake, which you go round to the right, crossing over the dyke. The path then goes around a house, through a wood and then a cornfield before reaching a small road that you should follow to the right. Continue straight ahead. The road becomes a track, passing by a farm and descending through fields and woods until you cross a bridge to reach the Moulin de Louvigny.
  • Step 2 :

Larreule Pass through the hamlet of Louvigny, past the chapel, and take the path marked with a star on the right: it climbs towards the houses of Lou Castet. On the way down, the road comes to a crossroads. Follow the signposted road. It soon becomes a track and climbs, then descends, crosses a stream and climbs back up to Fichous-Riumayou. After the church, take the road on the left, then take the small road on the right which descends gently towards the village of Larreule. There is a picnic area at the entrance to the hamlet, and a rest area for pilgrims with shelter and sanitary facilities near the church.
  • Step 3 :

Uzan Cross a road and follow the red and white markings and signs for Saint-Jacques. The route is almost flat, with very little traffic, as far as the bridge over the Luy-de-Béarn. Climb back up, then turn right at the fork, and then follow the route d'Uzan to the right. You will soon reach the church of Sainte-Quitterie and then the village of Uzan.
  • Step 4 :

Pomps Follow the small road towards Géus d'Arzacq. At first you walk flatly between maize and cows, then the road descends to the Ayguelongue picnic area, passes the church of Géus d'Arzacq, and continues to the small village of Pomps where a gîte welcomes pilgrims.
Don't miss
  • The Bearnaise house (Heritage)

The Béarnaise house is built using grey river pebbles in mortar. One of the essential features of the Béarnaise house is its roof: the pitch can be 50° or more, covered with flat tiles or, more frequently, slates. In Béarn, the houses vary according to the valleys and geographical areas.

  • Louvigny Mill (Heritage)

At a place called "Lou Castet", the remains of a feudal motte (known as Lou Castet) with a moat and defensive wall can be found. It dates from the 12th and 13th centuries. It was probably the feudal seat of the Viscounty of Louvigny, which remained until the end of the Ancien Régime. Louvigny also has farms dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as a 19th-century mill.

  • the GR 65 (Cultural site)

It's certainly the most mythical route, but once you've had a taste of it, it's hard to resist.
