Larreule : les Bénédictins

  • on foot : 2h30 - Difficulty Average
  • Distance : 9km
  • Vertical rise : 145m
  • Public : Famille
A family hike of less than 3 hours (with a few less easy sections) where nature and built heritage mingle. The trail follows in the footsteps of the Benedictine monks. The Bastide de Larreule was created at the end of the 13th century by Benedictine monks, at the very foot of the 10th-century abbey. It is one of the 3 most important abbeys in Béarn. The interior features a high altar, the Assumption, and 2 statues, the Virgin and Child and Saint Loup, carved from half a vertically split tree trunk. Preferably hiked in summer: paths are often muddy and flooded.

    Larreule Abbey (Heritage)

Larreule Abbey was a Benedictine abbey founded by Guillaume Sanche, Duke of Gascony, at the end of the 10th century. The building reached its apogee between the 11th and 14th centuries and was one of the three most important abbeys in Béarn. In decline from the end of the 14th century, it was ravaged in 1569 during the Wars of Religion and finally closed in 1773. Its conventual buildings disappeared during the French Revolution.
