Located at the northern edge of the Béarn hills, Arzacq dominates from the top of its ridge a nearby Landes country. Tursan and Chalosse are indeed its immediate neighbors. A rich historical heritage to discover during the guided tour of Arzacq: feudal mound which formerly in the 11th century was overhung by a wooden castle serving as a lookout and a last refuge surrounded by ditches, its squares, its arcades, its church and the tower of Peich.
Itinerary
  • Step 1 :

Arzacq-Arraziguet From the parking lot on Place de la République (opposite the town hall) Take Rue de la Basse-Ville (a feudal mound which, in the 11th century, was overlooked by a wooden castle serving as a watchtower and last refuge, surrounded by moats). At the first bend, turn right onto Chemin de Gnagne, continue and then descend along the Arriou stream.
  • Step 2 :

At the junction with a tarmac road, turn right and continue to the L'Arriou bridge. At the top of a small hill, turn right.
  • Step 3 :

At the crossroads (RD944) in the Vialé neighbourhood, immediately take the path on the left which will lead you to the Pountet farm and the Hournas farm until you cross the Louts stream (there is a small footbridge on your right).
  • Step 4 :

Once you have crossed the Louts stream, turn right at the picnic area and follow the stream through the forest. You will come to a small footbridge leading to the RD946 road (leisure area and Compostela trail).
  • Step 5 :

Head south and cross the road bridge via a small dirt track : you are now on a section of the GR65 (Saint-Jacques de Compostelle) trail. A little further on, take the first stony path on the left, which becomes a dirt track, and continue straight ahead.
  • Step 6 :

At the second intersection, climb up the moorland on your right until you reach the water tower. At the top of the tarmac hill, you will come to the Soubestre arena. Walk alongside the school and head for Place du Marcadieu, then Place de la République with its arcades, church and Peich tower.
