Arrien: Legend of Saint John

This lovely walk, starting in Arrien, is a delight for all the family and takes in the fountain of St Jean and its legend. The path crosses the countryside and goes deep into the undergrowth along very pleasant streams.

Itinerary

  • Step 1 :

    From the car park under the plane trees, you will come to one of Arrien's two drawing stations (the second being at the fountain), which allows you to draw the church. Walk past the church and take the grassy path to the left, heading due west towards the fountain. A sign tells the legend of St John. From the fountain, retrace your steps and, on returning to the church, turn left onto the track. At the farm, follow the path to the right, although it can be muddy in wet weather. It descends and crosses a pebble track which you need to climb again.

  • Step 2 :

    After climbing the hill, turn right onto the tarmac track and at the next crossroads, turn left onto the track leading to La Picharotte. At the crossroads, take the path on the right. It descends slightly and crosses a stream. Continue along the track as far as the road at the Moulin d'Espéchède. Watch out for traffic!

  • Step 3 :

    Walk 50 metres up the road and turn right onto the path. Cross over to the right bank of the stream and follow it up to the wood exit, crossing over the slate bridge. Continue along a track between meadows. Cross the road (beware of traffic) and follow the path up to a second road. Go right as far as the Arrien crossroads and take the D62. Follow the road carefully.

  • Step 4 :

    At the silo, follow the track due south until you cross the D42. When you reach the farm, turn left onto the local road. Continue down this road until you reach the crossroads at the calvary. The car park is on the right.

  • The fountain of Saint John (Rural heritage)

    Legend has it that during the Wars of Religion, Arrien's church was pillaged and burnt down. Nearby, a statuette of Saint John was found and a miraculous fountain sprang up. Reputed to heal varicose wounds and eye diseases, we now know that its benefits were known as early as the 14th century. In front of the fountain you'll find a hiking and drawing station.
