A charming hike full of interest, with shady undergrowth to the rhythm of the green woodpecker. The best time to enjoy orchids is May-June. They grow on dry grasslands, former vineyard land. Chapel, mill are the other points not to be missed!
Itinerary
  • Step 1 :

From the Bellegarde mill (8 chemin du Bourg), head towards Lespielle on the chemin du Bourg. Cross the bridge, and at the entrance to the village, you can visit a dry grassland by crossing a small bridge at the corner of a house. An explanatory board provides the necessary information. Return to the centre of Lespielle and at the crossroads, turn right onto the road. Follow the first farm track on the right. A steep climb takes you to the top of the hill. Turn right onto the tarmac road where the view opens up. Pass the farm and turn left onto the D13. Watch out for traffic, cross the road and take the Chemin de la Bouère. Turn left onto the local road.
  • Step 2 :

At the stop sign, cross the D13 again with care and take the chemin de Hayet. At the corner of a house, take the hidden path on the right. Once on the road, turn left and right towards the chapel. Return to the road and turn right. Walk past a house and turn right down a good track. Before entering the woods, this is the ideal place to enjoy the panoramic view of the Pyrenees. Follow the track, leaving the one on the left at the bend. Climb slightly and turn left at the crow's feet, then right. Cross a lawn and descend to a track. Turn left and follow the farm track. Enter Lespielle and take the Chemin du Bourg to reach the car park.
Don't miss
  • Wild orchids of the Vic-Bilh (Nature site)

From mid-April to the end of June, orchids dot the hillsides of Vic-Bilh. There are 29 species of orchid, with around 10 species per site. In addition to their ecological interest, these grasslands offer a unique Mediterranean landscape not often seen in south-west France.
