This circuit guides you on the traces of the Benedictine monks. The bastide of Larreule was created at the end of the XIIIth century by the Benedictine monks, at the foot of the Abbey dating from the Xth century. It is one of the 3 most important abbeys of Bearn. The circuit also serves, on either side of the banks of the Uzan and Luy de Béarn rivers, two other communes: Uzan and Mazerolles, ancient bastides also founded by the Benedictines of Larreule.

Don't miss
  • Larreule Abbey. (Heritage)

Church with transept built in the 12th century, partly destroyed during the Wars of Religion, in particular the apse replaced by a sacristy. Abolished in 1773, the abbey became a parish church. Inside, you will find a high altar of the Assumption, as well as 2 statues, the Virgin and Child and Saint Loup, carved from half a tree trunk split vertically.

  • The Luy de Béarn. (Nature site)

The bank upstream of the bridge is protected using a plant-based technique known as fascinage (willow bundles fixed between 2 rows of solidly anchored stakes). This is an environmentally-friendly alternative to rock armouring, with a return to vegetation. Here, the Luy de Béarn, like the Uzan (and others), has been declared to be of general interest.
