This is not a long ride, but it does require a certain level of cycling skill. It takes you deep into the hillsides of Béarn, between forested valleys and cultivated plateaus, to reach this beautiful stretch of water, tucked away at the bottom of a deep valley, only to be discovered at the last moment. A return trip.
Itinerary

  • Step 1 :

    Take the paved path opposite the road, which leads to the oratory and then to a small street. Follow it to the left for 100 metres. You will come to a crossroads. Continue straight ahead on a paved path that descends steeply, then turns right and joins a new road.

  • Step 2 :

    Cross it and take the track opposite, which descends to the stream, which you cross via a culvert. Climb back up the hillside. You will reach a new road, which you follow to the right. At the first junction, turn left. At each intersection, turn right. You will soon reach the entrance to the woods.

  • Step 3 :

    Stay on the path that descends, slightly to the left and then flattens out, running alongside a field. It then climbs steeply.

  • Step 4 :

    Before leaving the woods, leave the forest trail on your right and continue straight ahead (mountain bike trail markers 8 and 10) on a path lined with hedges. You will reach a road. Turn right and follow it for 50 metres, then turn left onto the track that descends towards the sanctuary. Follow it on the right and climb back up to the RD 40. Cross it and follow it to the left for 50 metres, then turn right onto a track in the middle of the fields. It leads to a new road, which you take to the left. At the first crossroads, turn right.

  • Step 5 :

    After 200 metres, take a track on the right that descends, goes around a small lake and then continues downhill through a pine forest. When the descent becomes less steep, look for a small footbridge on the right.

  • Step 6 :

    Take this path and then climb back up the hillside via a trail through the woods, which widens and becomes a track between two hedges. Join the tarmac road and follow it to the left. It descends for a long way. At the bottom of this descent, turn right: the track climbs back up to the dam and reaches Lake Balaing.

    In the 5th century, south-western Gaul was occupied by the Visigoths, who were Arians. The young Quitterie, daughter of Aetius, Visigoth king of Toulouse, secretly converted to Christianity and took a vow of chastity. To escape a marriage arranged by her father and to remain faithful to her faith, she fled Toulouse and is said to have come to our region. Caught by her suitor, she was beheaded in Aire-sur-Adour on 22 May 478. According to legend, when her head touched the ground, a fountain sprang up. Quitterie then carried her head to the slopes of the small hill where the church of Sainte Quitterie du Mas d'Aire sur l'Adour stands today.
