Chapel of Sainte-Quitterie (Cultural site) (Cultural site)The legend of Sainte-Quitterie. She is said to have been one of the daughters of the Visigoth prince, raised in the Catholic faith without her family's knowledge. Having vowed her virginity to Christ, she rejected the advances of a Visigoth prince named Germain, then fled and took refuge in the religious community of Aire. Numerous miracles enabled her to convert Leutimanus, the king of the region. Found by Euric's soldiers, she was sentenced to death in 472 and beheaded on 22 May 476 in what is now Rue Sainte-Quitterie. Legend has it that angels appeared and asked her to take her head in her arms and carry it to the marble tomb where it now lies in the crypt. Saint Quitterie was canonised in 585 at the Council of Toledo. This saint had a great influence. People came from far and wide to pray to the saint for the healing of the sick and the insane.
