Follow it and after 200 metres, turn right onto the small road that slopes gently downhill. It turns right.Step 2 :
100 metres after this bend, take a metal gate on the left which leads to a sunken path that descends towards the stream. Take a footbridge, then follow the stream upstream. 50 m after the footbridge, turn left onto a path lined with hedges that climbs up the hillside. It becomes steep and leads to a wider path, which you take to the left. Continue climbing gently along a comfortable path that leads to a small road at the top of the hill.Step 3 :
Turn left and continue for approximately 700 metres. At the first junction, turn left.Step 4 :
The track then descends towards Balaing, which you cross via a bridge.Step 5 :
At the end of the poplar grove, take the track on the left which climbs gently up to the outskirts of the village of Navailles.Step 6 :
At the end of this climb, turn left onto a narrow road that quickly runs alongside a hedge. 200 metres after this hedge, turn right onto the small road that leads back up to the village.
The castle of Navailles (Heritage)The Château de Navailles was first mentioned in 1046 as a motte-and-bailey castle built with wooden palisades. Later, in the 14th century, the Viscount of Béarn, Gaston Fébus, had a real castle built on this strategic site, which controlled the western approaches to Morlaàs. The tower, built using the same architectural style as other buildings of the period (in Pau and Montaner, for example), still stands today. For several centuries, the castle was the seat of the Barony of Navailles, vassal of the Viscounty of Béarn. Purchased in 1850 by Elie de Gontaut-Biron, the old buildings were demolished and replaced by those we know today.
